Cagers Look to Stay Atop the WSC

SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 23, 2017)- This Week: Cuesta Men’s Basketball enters the third week of Western State Conference play, and the final week of the first round, in first place in the circuit.  The Cougars host local rival Allan Hancock on Wednesday (5 PM) and travel to Moorpark on Saturday (1 PM) for a “lunchtime” special.   The rival Bulldogs are winless against the conference and the Raiders are 1-2 against the loop, however no team in the WSC, including the Cougars, boasts a winning record on the season. 

Last week: The Cougars picked up two more wins against the Western State Conference and sits alone atop the WSC standings with a 3-0 mark against the circuit.  The Cougars picked up a road win on Wednesday at Ventura, 75-70, and broke a first place tie on Saturday with a victory over second place Oxnard, 74-70.  The Cougars are 10-11 overall.    

Notes: Freshman Forward Noah Saunders (Pittsburgh, PA) has led the Cougars to the top of the Western State Conference standings with outstanding play against the loop.  He has stepped up his play against the loop and is averaging 19.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and, 2.0 assists per game versus the WSC.  On the season, he leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game and averages 11.3 points and 1.4 assists per contest.   



Cagers Look to Build Off Initial WSC Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 23, 2017)- Last Week: Cuesta Women's Basketball picked up its first Western State Conference win with a decisive home victory over Oxnard, 65-42, on Saturday.  The triumph came on the heals of Wednesday’s loss at #6 Ventura, 79-34, which is the team’s worst outing to date and dropped them to 0-2 in conference play.  The Cougars refocused their efforts after their loss to the Pirates and on Saturday scored more points before the intermission than they did at Ventura.  The Cougars, who spent most of their pre-conference in the rankings, appeared to be back in form on Saturday.  Cuesta is 12-9 overall and 1-3 against the WSC. 

This Week: Women’s Basketball wraps up its first swing through the Western State Conference with two games against the circuit this week.  The Cougars host local rival Allan Hancock on Wednesday (7 PM) and travel to Moorpark on Saturday (3 PM).  The Cougars are tied with the rival Bulldogs for 4th place in the WSC, however the Bulldogs also beat Cuesta in the title game of the Phillips 66 Tournament on December 3rd, 63-43.  Moorpark is a game ahead of both the Cougars and Bulldogs in the standings.

Notes:  Freshman Point Guard Tawny Lino (Santa Maria: Pioneer Valley HS) has been a bight spot for the Cougars against the Western State Conference.  She has led the Cougars in scoring in two of their three games and has bumped her scoring average from 12.2 to a team-high 14.1 points per game against the loop.  Lino was the only Cuesta player in double-figures at Ventura and led the squad with 17 points in the win over Oxnard.  She also leads the Cougars with 3.9 assists per game, which currently ranks 7th all time on Cuesta single season list. 



Cougars Open 2017 Season Ranked #6

SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 23, 2017)- This week: The 2017 Baseball season begins this Friday as the #6 Cuesta Cougars host a three-game homestand against #9 Riverside.  The Cougars are the defending Western State Conference Champions and ended last season one-run away from their first CCCAA State Final appearance since 2002.   The Cougars are led by 2016 WSC Coach of the Year Bob Miller  (358-228-2/15th) and return six players from last year’s squad.   The Cougars host the Tigers on Friday (2 PM), Saturday (1 PM) and, Sunday (Noon)

Last Week: The 2017 campaign begins on January 27.

Softball Opens 2017 Campaign at Home

SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 23, 2017)- This week: The 2017 Softball season begins this Saturday as the Cuesta Cougars host a doubleheader against West Hills.  The Cougars and Falcons are scheduled to open the twinbill at 10 AM and begin the nightcap at Noon.  Former Cuesta Star Jeananne Ruck has taken over as the Cougars’ Head Coach and leads a squad led by four players from the 2016 team, including 2016 All-Western State Conference First Team Pitcher Demi Danell (Hanford).  Ruck is the Cougars’ sixth head coach over the past 11 season. 

Last Week: The 2017 campaign begins on January 28.
